Safety on the water
Life jacket – your most important piece of equipment
A life jacket should always be worn when paddling – regardless of weather or experience level. It is part of your equipment and is designed for comfort during long days on the water. Make sure it fits properly and keep it on throughout the trip.
Always paddle close to shore
Stay close to the shoreline, especially in larger lakes like Värmeln. The wind can pick up quickly and waves can build up unexpectedly. If you paddle close to land, you can always get to safety quickly.
Stay in touch
Make sure your phone is charged and packed waterproof. Sandvikengården has a 24/7 emergency phone line if you need help. Always notify someone at home of your planned route.

Navigation & Maps
How do I find the right one?
When booking you will receive a complete trail description with maps for your chosen route. Lack of signage is common, but if you follow the map and trail description you should have no problems. Feel free to bring an extra compass as a backup.
Paddling rules on the water
The waterways are narrow – never paddle multiple canoes across. In rivers and near power plants, always paddle one canoe at a time. Keep your distance from motor vehicles and fishing gear.
💧
Food & Water
Drinking water
Bring drinking water in a container or canister. All cooking can be done with lake/river water, which must be boiled first. Avoid using water directly from watercourses that pass near settlements.
Meal planning
Plan your food for the entire trip. Dry goods, canned goods and freeze-dried food take up the least space. Several of our trails pass through towns where you can stock up on provisions (e.g. Borgvik, Austmarka). Storm kitchens are available for rent as an option.

Clothing & Packing
What should I wear?
Adjust your clothing to the weather and environment. Layering works best – you can get hot in the sun and cold in the wind. Avoid cotton next to your body; choose synthetics or wool that dry quickly. Good shoes with grip are important for land transport.
How do I pack correctly?
Extra clothes should be packed waterproof in the packing drums (60 liters) that are included in the equipment. Pack what you need first at the top. Distribute the weight evenly in the canoe – heavy in the middle, light at the ends. Don't forget sunscreen and mosquito repellent!
🌧️
In bad weather
What do I do if the weather changes?
Bad weather is a common reason for canoeing trips to be cancelled. Go ashore and wait for better weather if it gets windy. Use the tarpaulin as rain protection. You can always contact Sandvikengården for pick-up – preferably call a day in advance so we can plan a time and place.
📞 Sandvikengården's emergency service: We have a 24/7 telephone service (+ 46 (0) 570-27 13 89 ) during the paddling season. Never hesitate to call if you need help – no matter the time of day.
